A quick chat with D.L. Hughley: The Story Behind Charlie’s Boy

Some conversations stay with you long after they’re over.

I recently had the honor of sitting down with D.L. Hughley-American actor, comedian, producer, and writer, best known for The Hughleys, ComicView, and as one of the “Big Four” comedians in The Original Kings of Comedy. Wow!

If you didn't know, DL has a new memoir out sharing pieces of his upbring. I was fortunate to meet with him for a 5 minute chat before his book signing and conversation at The Pageant in St. Louis, Missouri, to discuss his memoir, Charlie’s Boy.

Hearing D.L. share what inspired him to write about his father was both insightful and motivational in sharing one's truth. At its heart, Charlie’s Boy is a story about coming of age, understanding, and learning to see our parents through a different lens as we grow older. I can definitely relate to memories that facilitated growth and maturity.

Sometimes it's just time for our stories to be told.

What stood out to me most was the opportunity this story creates, particularly for young and older men, to explore emotions, confront experiences that may have been bottled up for years, and begin releasing things that have gone unspoken.

Sometimes, age, experience, and perspective allow us to understand our parents in ways we couldn't when we were younger.

D.L. was an incredibly gracious and engaging interviewee, and I truly appreciated his willingness to speak openly and honestly about something so personal. It was an absolute treat and honor to spend a few moments in conversation with him.

Thank you, D.L. Hughley for your kindness, vulnerability, and honesty. We need more of that in the world.

Tourist tip: Grab a copy of Charlie's Boy for your upcoming vacation.
