There are hotels you book because you need somewhere to sleep, and then there are hotels that become part of the story you tell when you get home. You know the kind: memorable design, a little personality, and an atmosphere that makes you want to stay just one more night.

I love discovering accommodations that feel like an experience all on their own, and you don't have to fly across the world to find them. From a cabin escape at Lake of the Ozarks to art-filled St. Louis stays and a colorful Lexington boutique hotel, here are five places I'd happily check into again.

1. The Treehouses at Whiskey Woods | Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri

Sometimes the best getaway isn't about a packed itinerary. It's about having absolutely nowhere you need to be. That's what draws me to Treehouses at Whiskey Woods at Lake of the Ozarks: a change of pace, a cozy place to settle in, and the chance to connect with nature.

Why I'd go back: For the quiet. Give me a slow morning with a cup of coffee, a little fresh air, and time to enjoy the setting instead of rushing to the next activity. This is the kind of stay I'd choose when I need a reset.

Perfect for: A couple's retreat, a peaceful weekend away, or anyone who needs a break from their calendar.

2. Angad Arts Hotel | St. Louis, Missouri

A hotel room that matches your mood? That's a stay with personality! Angad Arts Hotel isn't interested in blending in. Its color-inspired rooms and artistic touches make checking in feel like walking into a true work of art.

One of my favorite things about a good staycation is experiencing the city where I live in a completely different way. At Angad, the design makes even a familiar destination feel new. The green room in my photo is a perfect example: bold, playful, and unlike a standard hotel room.

Why I'd go back: To stay in the yellow room. It's the only color I haven't experienced, yet.

Perfect for: Art lovers, a girls' weekend, a date night, or a staycation that doesn't feel ordinary.

3. 21c Museum Hotel | St. Louis, Missouri

Art and hospitality under one roof? Sign me up. At 21c Museum Hotel, the stay is about much more than the accommodations. The contemporary art experience gives you something to explore without even leaving the property. While the historic building brings its own character, I especially love the idea of making a full evening of it: spend time with the artwork, enjoy dinner at Idol Wolf, and head upstairs instead of worrying about driving home.

Why I'd go back: To see more of the artwork and turn an ordinary night into a mini cultural escape. It's a place where the hotel is part of the itinerary.

Perfect for: Couples, art enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates hotels with a distinct point of view.

4. Elwood Hotel & Suites | Lexington, Kentucky

You can tell a lot about a hotel before you even walk through the doors. Elwood makes a colorful first impression with its oversized floral mural, and that spirited design is exactly what I love about a boutique stay.

For me, a hotel is the home base for discovering a destination. Lexington offers plenty of reasons to make a long weekend of it, from local restaurants and bourbon culture to the beautiful southern charm. A place with Elwood's personality makes the trip feel even more special.

Why I'd go back: To enjoy that distinctive boutique feel again and spend more time exploring the food, culture, and scenery around Lexington.

Perfect for: A girlfriends' getaway, a couple's weekend, or a road trip with a little style.

5. The Truitt | St. Louis, Missouri

There's something special about a small hotel that feels like it has its own story. The Truitt is full of intimate details, from the dramatic drapery to the vintage-inspired touches that give the room personality. It's the kind of stay that invites you to linger a little longer.

And sometimes luxury isn't about the size of a property. It's about the mood, the thoughtful design, and those little moments that make a simple overnight stay feel like an occasion. The robe-and-window moment in my photo captures that feeling for me.

Why I'd go back: To enjoy a slower, more intimate St. Louis stay with all the character of a boutique retreat.

Perfect for: A romantic weekend, a solo staycation, or someone visiting St. Louis who'd rather experience a distinctive boutique property than a big chain hotel.

Tourist Tip: Choose a Stay That's an Experience

Each of these places has a different personality, and that's exactly why they made my list. Sometimes I want to be tucked away in nature. Sometimes I'm in the mood for bold design, art, or a little boutique charm. The best stay is the one that matches the trip and experience you want to have.

Which one would you choose first: a cozy cabin, a colorful room, an art museum hotel, or a charming boutique retreat? I'd love to know.
